The reference block type 1 is a residually magnetized metal disc, where, caused by a special treatment, a network of coarse and fine cracks had been generated. The magnetic field of the reference block generates stray fluxes of different strength across these cracks. More sensitive inspection media result in a more distinct indications as compared to the indications when lower sensitivity is used. The central bore hole is made for easier handling.

The working principle of the magnetic coil is to charge the capacitor with a high voltage small current, and then the capacitor instantly discharge the coil and generate a large current on the magnetized coil, which generates a magnetic field. In short, the magnetic charging coil is to charge and discharge the capacitor, so that the coil is used as a load to generate a magnetic field. Small parts should not be centered within the coil, but held close to it where field strength is strongest. The longitudinal magnetic field cutting across the crack attracts and holds iron powder to indicate the crack.
